Prevent Gum Disease During National Gum Care Month

Drs. Lawrence and Kyle Duffy use laser surgery to treat gum disease. With National Gum Care Month upon us, we as your family dentist in Orlando, FL, want to take this opportunity to go over the primary causes of this condition.

While gum disease can generally be reversed with treatment, there are certain factors that contribute to its development.

·         Hormonal Changes: Women who are pregnant, menstruating, or experiencing menopause can be at greater risk for gingivitis and subsequent gum disease due to increased sensitivity. It is important to maintain good oral health during these times.
·         Poor Dental Hygiene: Both men and women should brush and floss regularly in order to keep their teeth and gums healthy. It is best to brush twice a day and to floss once a day. Using an antibacterial mouthwash can also be beneficial.
·         Illnesses that Affect the Immune System: A strong immune system is very important for maintaining oral health. Some illnesses compromise a person’s immune system, including HIV and cancer. Anyone with a chronic illness should be sure to keep regular cleaning appointments.
·         Medications: Some medications reduce saliva, which can negatively impact teeth and gums. Other medications can affect the growth of gum tissue. While most medications do not have a negative affect on oral health, a patient can consult with his doctor to see if any of his medications do have an effect.
·         Smoking: Smoking greatly impacts the health of gums. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “[Smokers] have twice the risk for gum disease compared with a nonsmoker.”

Patients who do need care for gum disease can often use laser treatment. Laser gum surgery, as compared with traditional surgery, is much more painless and less invasive. Instead of a scalpel, Drs. Lawrence and Kyle Duffy use laser energy, which causes less bleeding and inflammation. To contact our staff regarding an appointment, please call (407) 930-1570.
